Jyotish: Can the Planets Reveal a Health Crisis?

For a long time now, I have taken Jyotish (Vedic astrology) seriously.
It used to be I’d read my horoscope in the newspaper for fun, but never gave it a second thought. Even though I’ve had Vedic astrologers (Jyotishis) in my family going back generations, I had not taken much interest in this ancient science.
I followed the usual path of college, career, and enrolling in graduate school at night. Shortly after I began graduate school, I woke up and had difficulty standing. My knee had gone out for no apparent reason. I had always been healthy and maintained a vegetarian diet. Multiple doctor visits and medical tests ensued with no conclusion other than it might be psychosomatic. Yet, that was not my reality, as I began to experience bi-lateral knee pain.
It’s ironic how you rarely think about your health until something happens. I got x-rays, MRIs, and saw all types of doctors. My out of pocket medical expenses climbed, even though I had insurance. After a few years, a doctor diagnosed me with cartilage problem in my knees. This problem usually happened to athletic teenage girls. But, I had never been athletic. I tried physical therapy and wore knee braces. I could no longer run and stairs became a huge challenge. Regardless of what I did, my health did not improve; it worsened. The pain eventually spread through my body. I looked perfectly healthy but was in constant pain.
Western medicine did not work for me as my sensitive system could not even tolerate aspirin. Eventually, someone directed me towards Ayurveda, the ancient healing system of India. I was familiar with it. I went to the Ayurvedic Institute in New Mexico for treatment. The Ayurvedic doctor there, Dr. Vasant Lad, looked at me, took my pulse, and he expressed what I had been experiencing emotionally. He invited me to come and study there.
Within six months, I had quit my corporate job, put my condo on the market, and enrolled at the Ayurvedic Institute. It had been six years since my knee problems began. I wanted to take responsibility for my own health, rather than keep waiting for someone to cure me.
They offered weekend workshops at the Ayurvedic Institute. There was a Jyotishi there named Hart deFouw. I attended his intro lectures. I saw people showing him their charts, so I had mine prepared. At his next talk, I showed him my chart during the break. I didn’t say anything about my situation. He looked at it briefly and articulated how I had been searching for answers regarding my health for a long time but had been unable to find the solutions. He went on to suggest what the probable cause was.
That was a life-changing moment for me. This was the first concrete piece of info that I had heard in ages! I made it my mission to learn what this man knew. At my first Jyotish (Vedic astrology) reading with Hart, he gave me some practical advice to help me manage my health. He surprised me with all the details he knew about me. Combined with what I was learning in my Ayurvedic studies, I was able to truly get in touch with my physiology and learn what was beneficial.
I studied and worked at the Ayurvedic Institute for three years and learned extensively about herbs, nutrition, and Ayurvedic treatments. I continued to study Jyotish, palmistry, and Vaastu Shastra (Vedic architecture) with Hart for almost two decades.
As I studied Jyotish, I understood that my health crisis coincided with a change in planetary cycles.
When I studied medical Jyotish, we were given a “pro-forma” for immobility and it was found in my chart. The linkage between Ayurveda and Jyotish became a key aspect in my journey to health.
This is something that the ancient Indians knew thousands of years ago. A classically trained Ayurvedic physician knew Jyotish, palmistry, yoga asanas, and Vaastu shastra. He knew that they were all pieces of a larger puzzle and must be connected to see the whole picture.
My health gradually began to improve and it took a few more years till I was back to normal. I used Jyotish extensively to determine what I needed to do, when to do it, and the time frames which were beneficial for healing treatments and which were best for rest. Jyotish and Ayurveda became my profession rather than just an avocation. I regularly utilize medical Jyotish to assist my family, fiends, and clients with leading a healthier and more fulfilling lifestyle.
