What is Jyotish, or Vedic Astrology?

Vedic astrology, or Jyotish, originated in India thousands of years ago. It ultimately provides us with a deeper understanding of the intricate aspects of ourselves through a fuller appreciation of our destiny.
The word Vedic is derived from the Vedas, the world’s most ancient books of knowledge from India. Veda means “wisdom”. This universal knowledge was imparted to the sages about 5,000 years ago when they were absorbed in a meditative state of pure consciousness.
Astrology studies the influence of the planets and stars on human life. It is the role of the astrologer to interpret the influence of these bodies on an individual’s life. The planets continually exert a subtle energetic influence on us and our environment.
What is Jyotish?
The word jyoti means “a flame or light”. It’s the light which shines down from the heavens and gives us the ability to see physically and also to look deeper into the subtle energies of life. The suffix -sh means “best or wisest”. Therefore, the word jyotish can be translated as the “science of light” or “the wisdom of the heavens”.
Vedic Astrology is famous for its accuracy. Your birth chart is a snapshot of the placement of the planets in the heavens at the time of your birth. It provides a storybook for your life from birth to death and gives insight into your life’s purpose. We experience planetary cycles throughout our lives, which tell us about the likelihood and timing of future events. By knowing what lies ahead, you can take advantage of upcoming opportunities and minimize future obstacles.
Astrology provides deep insights into your karmic patterns and innate tendencies. There is also great emphasis placed on the spiritual components of an individual’s life. You can use this knowledge to provide you with guidance in areas of life where you require further clarity, and thus bring more harmony and fulfillment into your life.
