Was that a coincidence, or are you in sync?

Can an event be just a coincidence, or is it synchronicity?

When you think of someone that calls you that day, or when you think of someone that you reach out to and they say they were thinking of you all day, how does it make you feel?

According to Oxford Dictionaries, the definition of coincidence is: “a remarkable concurrence of events or circumstances without apparent causal connection…serendipity.”

The definition of synchronicity is the simultaneous occurrence of events that appear significantly related, having the same frequency.

Is there a difference between coincidence and synchronicity ?

This week a dear friend from New Jersey, whom I’ve known for 27 years, sent me a lotus necklace in the mail. After recently giving a Grief and Loss class and using the lotus as an analogy for our inner process and evolution, this gift comes in the mail. My New Jersey friend was not at the class.

In this kind of event we realize that there is a subtle plane of energy working with our thoughts, our intentions and feelings. We step into a moment of wonder and curiosity about the natural flow of things and events when this kind of synchronicity occurs. We realize that there is a “cosmic clock” at work on a subtle plane and that the frequency we are resonating to is a real thing and we attract those things , events, relationships in which we are vibrating.

With more difficult situations it may take time to understand what a certain circumstance is revealing to us, and, who knows, we may never see the bigger picture until later on. Nevertheless, I told my New Jersey friend that she was very “tuned in”, and she replied, “We’ll have to take a long walk next time I see you to understand that. I simply love giving gifts to those that I love.” What a humble and beautiful person she is. I am blessed with her loving friendship.

Are you missing messages?

Carl Jung ( 1875-1961), a Swiss psychiatrist, understood that the power of synchronicity, which can overwhelm the rational mind, held significance. His clients would make mandalas from their sessions and dreams they had using color to express what they were feeling inside and connecting with this subtle plane of energy.

He had one client who refused to believe there was any reality but the one in her mind. She dreamed once of a certain type of “beetle” that kept trying to tell her something. She refuted these dreams until one day in her therapy session this “beetle” appeared at the window trying to get in. Need I say more? How many times do we ignore a message that is in our face?

What does synchronicity have to do with Ayurveda?

One of the ways Ayurveda teaches us to be with the mind is something called “wonder” — like the moment of wonder that occurs in synchronistic events. When we synchronize ourselves with our own natures and with nature outside, we can then access these subtle realms that reveal answers to “Who am I?” and “What is my purpose?”

From this place we can begin to feel connected to ourselves and in sync with the flow of life — our own lives as well as those around us — and the greater picture. The real fun begins when you can listen from inside on a regular basis and surrender yourself to that which is guiding you, when life takes you on a supreme adventure…and you get to play lead role.

As the season changes and these beautiful colors appear, what a perfect time to “wonder” about the nature of life, of your life and the lives of those around you, and discover synchronicity in your daily life. Perhaps the rock is already thrown, and all you have to simply do is align yourself with it!  Something to ponder ….
