Fluoride In Your Water? Remove with Tulsi

By on March 12, 2016

A team of Indian researchers has found that the leaves and stem of the tulsi plant, or ocimum sanctum, can detoxify water with high fluoride content, thus making it safe for human consumption.  Researchers from Rajasthan University in India, have discovered that  Tulsi, also known as Holy Basil, significantly reduces the amount of fluoride in drinking water.

An experiment was conducted in a village of Narketpally Mandal by soaking 75 mg of Holy Basil leaves in 100ml of water that contained over 7 parts per million of fluoride. After soaking the leaves in the water for a mere 8 hours, the fluoride was reduced to just 1.1 parts per million. The World Health Organization says that ‘safe’ levels of fluoride in water are no higher than 1 part per million.

“With initial fluoride concentration of 5 ppm, it was observed that maximum 94% of fluoride can be removed with a dose of 75 mg of fresh basil leaves in a sample of 100 ml- for a contact period of 20 minutes,” reported Mr Kamble.

Fresh basil stems with a dose of 100 mg/100 ml had a removal efficiency of 75%. Whereas for dry leaves and dry stems at a dose of 250 mg/100 ml, the removal efficiency was 78% and 74% respectively.

Tulsi is revered in Ayurveda as both a sacred plant and a potent medicine.
